Onyanko Club Today
Reunited in 2010 for Boss Zeitaku Bito
Onyanko Club has remained an important part of J-pop and idol culture since the group broke up in 1987, a number of "Best Of" and "Remix" albums have been released.Their songs continue to be covered by other artists in Japan
The "Onyanko Club"formula is one that hasbeen used multiple times in the idol industry. One of the first groups to use this management style was "Sakurakko Club", which formed in 1993 and was basically a carbon copy of Onyanko Club, using their TV show to audition girls and promote their music. Like Onyanko Club, the group only lasted a few years. A few more unsuccessful attempt were made to recreate the fame achieved by Onyanko Club, but it wasn't until the end of the millennium that idol groups became relevant again due largely to the success of Morning Musume, but also attributable to Checkicco (another Akimoto Yasushi creation). Today the groups like Morning Musume and AKB48 is one of the top selling groups in Japan, due largely in part to Onyanko Club paving the way.
Since the group disbanded, several of the girls have went on to find success in solo careers in the entertainment field. Others have opted for a life out of the limelight, choosing a business career or family life. In 2002, the group reunited to create the single "Shoumikigen" and in 2010 they reunited again to promote "Boss Zeitaku Bito", a canned coffee drink. It's not uncommon for a former Nyan-Nyan to be a guest on a talk show where idols are the subject, or for a Nyan-Nyan to hold a small fan event for her former and current wota.
